We Did It!

One week ago yesterday, my Relentless Optimism teammates and I walked across the finish line of the Boston 2010 3 Day for the Cure!

Jen and I on the route!
It was a long, hot, emotional weekend but one that I would gladly take on again and again.  Having my life long best friends by my side for this incredible journey was wonderful - we laughed, we cried, we ached and in the end, we were arm in arm as we walked into Closing Ceremonies, 60 miles closer to a world a without breast cancer.

I have so many stories to share with all of you and I will do my best to start posting my thoughts and stories from the event soon.  However, I am in the last throes of my PhD thesis and now that the hard work of training is behind me, I really do need to refocus my efforts on my school work.  But rest assured, Kristen is still walking and will still be posting!  (To lapse into the third person for a minute...)

The first goal for KW will be to catch up on my Blog Link posts from the last few weeks.  A lot of people in the 3 Day community have mentioned how much they appreciate those posts and I love putting them together, so that will be happening this week.  I am also hard at work touching up my photos from the 3 Day (over 600!) in order to post them online ASAP.  And once those photos are up, it will be story time!

Thank you all so very much for your support of me and my teammates throughout this adventure.  It has meant more to me than I can possibly say!

With my teammates at the finish line!

Oh, and don't forget!  There is still time to donate!  We can accept donations up until four weeks after the walk (so three weeks from today!).  If you would still like to donate, you can do so on my personal donation page on the the 3 Day website.  Thanks!

***Please note that both of the photos in this post are courtesy of Brian Ristuccia, who was taking photos throughout the Boston 3 Day and kindly posted them on Facebook for all of the walkers and crew members to see.  Thank you Brian!

Boston 3 Day Spectator Info!

Attention friends, family and assorted supportive strangers in the Boston area!  The Boston 2010 3 Day for the Cure is just five days away which means it is time to make your plans to come out and support all of us during our 3 day, 60 mile journey!

There are three different opportunities for spectators to come out and be a part of the 3 Day experience: Opening Ceremonies on Friday morning, Cheering Stations along the route throughout the three days of the event and Closing Ceremonies on Sunday evening.  I'm going run through each of these to give you all an idea of what to expect should you choose to join us (and you should!).  Please note that I am borrowing much of this information directly from the Spectator Information section of the 3 Day website, which can be found here.

Opening Ceremonies

Friday June 23rd at 6:30am

Spectator Parking Directions:
  • From Route 135/Waverly Street, proceed on Fountain Street, turn right onto Winter Street and proceed for approximately 0.9 miles.
  • Turn right onto Dr. Harvey Cushing Way.
  • Turn right into the parking lot for Summerville at Farm Pond.
  • Please note that parking will not be permitted at Barbieri School, across the street from Farm Pond.
The Komen 3-Day for the Cure begins early Friday morning with the Opening Ceremony. When you arrive, take a moment to write the names of the people in your life who have lost their lives to breast cancer on the white ribbons we will provide. Those ribbons will be used to create a special memorial flag that will be raised during the ceremony.

This celebration is not just for participants. Friends and family are highly encouraged to attend, though please note that seating will not be available, so if you are unable to stand for 30-60 minutes, you may want to bring a folding chair. Please allow extra travel time due to expected traffic congestion at the site.

After the Opening Ceremony is over, participants will begin walking the 60-mile route and start a journey of a lifetime. It will be even more special if you are there to help send them off with smiles and encouragement. We'll also have the 3DayGear.com™ store on site if you'd like to purchase a souvenir for yourself or your participant.

Public cheering stations are a great way to show your support along the route to encourage walkers and let them know that you are with them every step of the way. Seeing familiar faces cheering them on can provide that extra burst of energy that gets them to take that next step or go the next mile. Create banners, hold up signs, bring some music and make some noise - anything to make them smile, get energized and keep walking.

Friends and family are highly encouraged to attend, though please note that seating will not be available, so if you are unable to stand for 30-60 minutes, you may want to bring a folding chair.

Public Transportation:
UMass Boston is located less than a mile from the MBTA’s JFK/UMass Station, which serves both the Red Line (subway) and the Old Colony Line (commuter rail). The university runs a regular, free shuttle bus service between the JFK/UMass stop and the campus. The trip normally takes less than ten minutes. Route 2 Bus runs Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 5:45 p.m. every 20 minutes.

Parking:
University of Massachusetts is located off of 1-93. Parking will be available, at no charge, on the University of Massachusetts Campus.

After three days and 60 miles, participants will take a final and incredibly emotional victory walk into the Closing Ceremony. Friends, family and supporters should arrive at the Closing Ceremony site at least one hour early to get the best view of the program. We encourage you to carpool or take public transportation. Not only is it better for the planet, but it will help lessen traffic congestion for everyone.

All walkers and crew members should remain in the Participant Holding Area where they will receive a victory shirt, cheer on fellow walkers and crew members and celebrate one last time together before their dramatic victory walk. The Participant Holding Area is CLOSED to spectators. If you wish to meet with a participant before the Ceremony begins, please have them meet you at the Closing Ceremony site. All participants must return to the Holding Area no later than 4:30 p.m. in order to join the victory walk.

Don't forget to continue the spirit of kindness we'll be building on the 3-Day for the Cure throughout and beyond the Closing Ceremony!

We hope that everyone will come out and see us in Boston.  This event is hard to truly capture in stories and photos.  It really is a moving experience to be a part of and we would love to share it with you.  This event is the culmination of months of commitment and hard work.  We can't wait to celebrate with all of you.  See you there!

Boston 3 Day Weather Forecast

With the Boston 2010 3 Day for the Cure just five days away, it's time to check in on the weather forecast for the weekend:

Image and forecast courtesy of The Weather Channel.

Well that certainly looks wet.  However, I refuse to panic about the possibility of walking in the rain again this year.  I checked the extended forecast for Boston yesterday and it looked completely different.  Mid to upper 80s and no rain whatsoever.  I will definitely be checking back again before I leave for Boston but I will probably pick up an extra rain poncho just in case.

I am, however, very excited that the low temps are around 70 degrees.  When I've done the 3 Day in the past, the event has been in October.  While the October date does make for some more tolerable temperatures during the day, it also means that it's about 40 degrees at night while we're out sleeping in tents.  So sleeping in 70 degree weather will be a welcome change, even if we are dodging rain drops!

Our Team Shirts!

(Note: This was cross-posted from the Relentless Optimism team blog because I was just too excited not to share!)

Things are really moving here at Relentless Optimism headquarters, with the Boston 3 Day for the Cure stepping off in just five days!  Our team banner was delivered, our article was published in our hometown paper and now, our team shirts have arrived!

The Official Relentless Optimism Walker shirt!

We are incredibly excited to have our own team shirts this year to wear throughout the 3 Day event.  This will be my third 3 Day event and it will be the first time that my teammates and I have had matching shirts for the walk.  We truly feel like a team now!

Our team shirts were generously provided for our team by Mag Mom Diana Moreland and her company Diana's Costume Closet who we cannot thank enough for her support of our team.  The shirts feature another version of the Relentless Optimism logo on our team banner that was again created for us by Robyn Torkewitz.  If you would like Robyn to design something for your team, you can see more of her work and find her contact information here.

Playing supermodel in our team shirts before a training walk.

For our shirts, we worked closely with Custom Ink to get everything just right.  If you are interested in ordering something similar for your team or event, I highly recommend them.  They will work with you to ensure the clearest possible printing of your design and will check in with you at every possible.  I worked with a wonderful guy named Neil who was incredibly patient with me as I made change after change to our design.  Even after five different proofs, we still received our shirts three days earlier than expected.  I really can't say enough great things about Custom Ink!

For those who are wondering, our shirts are the Augusta Lades Performance Sleeveless Ts.  I tried mine out on a training walk and it was great!  No weird seams and no pulling.  If you are looking to order shirts for the 3 Day, this really is an excellent choice.

A closer look at the back of shirts, featuring our team sponsors (click to enlarge).
Some small changes were made from this proof to the final versions of our shirts for clarity.

I can't wait to hit the streets of Boston in our new team shirts.  If you see us out walking, please be sure to say hello!

Relentless Optimism Thanks You!

(Note:  I'm cross-posting this from our team blog so that everyone sees it!)

All of us here at Relentless Optimism are incredibly grateful for every donation that we have received this year.  We would not be able to do this crazy thing that is the 3 Day without the support of our friends, family and generous strangers.  The primary goal of the Breast Cancer 3 Day is to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer.  It is because of the generosity of all of our donors and supporters that we are now that much closer to achieving a world without breast cancer.

We are incredibly thankful for and overwhelmed by the number of donations that we have received in pursuit of our team goal of raising $20,000 before the end of August.  We are thankful for every single person that entered one of our fundraising contests or bought flowers through Flower Power.  We are thankful for everyone that supported us through Tastefully Simple or Mary Kay.  If you bought some stuff through our Amazon link or clicked on our Google Ads before they were shut down, well, we're thankful to you too.  It is because of all of you that we have been able to raise so much money for such an important cause.

Because we are so touched by the enormous generosity that has been sent our way, we want everyone to know all of your names.  Shouting all of your names from a hilltop is little too difficult and hiring a skywriter to write all your names in the clouds is a little too expensive.  So instead of all that, we have chosen to instead recognize each and every one of our donors and sponsors on a large banner that will be proudly on display between our tents during the Boston 3 Day for the Cure!

Our team banner, courtesy of Vistaprint!

I am thrilled that we are able to recognize all of our supporters in such a public way.  If you donated to us in any way before July 1st, then your name is in there and everyone in Boston will know it.  We are truly honored that you have all thrown your support behind us and we hope that we can make you all proud as we walk up and down the streets of Boston in just under two weeks time.

I also would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge my cousin Robyn Torkewitz who designed the spiffy new Relentless Optimism logo that you see on our banner.  She also designed a second logo for our team shirts that we will be showing off in Boston as well.  Robyn is a very talented graphic designer and we're thrilled that she donated her services to us in this way.  If you would like to see more of her work, you can find her personal website here

Finally, if you will be walking in the Boston 3 Day for the Cure, please be on the look out for our banner!  If you happen to spot us in the sea of pink tents, please be sure to stop by and say hi!

THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!

Send Me Mail on the Event!

One of the things that I look forward to the absolute most when I am on a 3 Day event is getting the mail.  I know what you're thinking - why on earth would we need to get our mail when we're only living in the 3 Day camp for 3 days?  Well, because it's a fun and easy way for our loved ones and supporters to send us some encouragement along the way even if they can't physically be with us during the 3 Day!

The 3 Day is a really tough event.  We will be walking the equivalent of two and a half marathons in just three days.  We're going to be sleeping in small tents, possibly in the cold or the rain.  We will be dealing with blisters, sun burns and swollen hands throughout our journey.  We're going to be showering in tractor trailers for crying out loud.  And at some point during the event, everyone hits a wall.  For me, it's usually the morning of Day 3.  It's cold and wet in the morning and my Day 1 endorphins have totally worn off.  I'm usually getting sore and having to haul my stuff back to the gear truck is usually the last thing I want to do at that point.  I'm usually annoyingly cheerful and energetic but truly, everyone hits that wall.

For almost everyone that takes on the challenge of the 3 Day, there is nothing more motivating than knowing that there are people out there rooting for us to succeed.  Seeing our loved ones amongst the sea of strangers at cheering stations provides an energy boost that you cannot imagine.  And hearing from our friends, family and even strangers that can't be there with us in person can be just as effective.  It is truly a highlight for me to read the encouraging words of my supporters when I get to the 3 Day camp after a long day of walking.

If you would like to send mail to me (or any other Boston 3 Day walker!), you can do so by addressing your letters and cards to:

3-Day for the Cure PO
Attn: Name of Participant
P.O. Box 8557
Warwick, RI 02888

Please note that this address is for the Boston walk only.  The mailing addresses for the other events will be released about eight weeks before each event.  Only envelopes will be delivered on event, so please, no packages.

Finally, all mail for the Boston 3 Day must be post marked no later than July 13th to ensure delivery on the event.  Husbands and boyfriends, mark your calendars now, even if you will be at the event in person.  Your wives and girlfriends will love you for it - trust me!

I'm a Little Bit Famous!

One of things that I failed to mention in my Week in Review yesterday was that this past Friday, I recorded a short interview with John of the 60 Miles, 3 Days blog!

John has one of the best 3 Day blogs out there.  He is full of really great tips about a whole host of topics, including everything from training to PortaPotties.  John has also been posting a video series highlighting veteran 3 Day walker's favorite 3 Day moments, of which my short video was a part.

You can watch my interview where I talk a little bit about the history of Relentless Optimism and my two favorite 3 Day moments below.  You can also find my interview on John's blog.

Thank you John!

Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the earrings that I am wearing in the video were made by Janine of Athena's Armoury.  They are a part of Janine's Pink Warrior collection of hand made chain maille jewelry.  100% of the profits from the Pink Warrior collection will benefit Janine's fundraising for the 3 Day.  You can read more about the Pink Collection on Janine's blog here and you can shop for pieces from the collection on Janine's Etsy webstore here.

Calling all Medical Professionals!

The organizers of the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure are currently in need of people for their  Health Services Crew!

Because of the physical toll that walking 60 miles in 3 days can take on a body, the Medical Crew are some of the most important crew members on the 3 Day.  The Health Services team, as they are officially called, are the largest crew team on the event, comprised of nearly 100 medical professionals.  RNs, MDs, EMTs, physical therapists, chiropractors and athletic trainers help keep the walkers, crew and volunteers on the 3 Day healthy, hydrated and happy during the event.  If you or someone you know is a licensed medical professional in one of the states hosting a 3 Day event this year, please think about becoming a part of the Medical Crew!

Joining the 3 Day Medical Crew is a four day commitment (three days on event and a 1/2 day of training before the event).  There is a $90 registration fee (just like for the walkers) that covers all of your expenses on the event.  You will live in the pink tent city with all of the walkers and crew and will fully be a part of the 3 Day experience.  There is no fundraising required for crew members, but it is always appreciated and encouraged.  If you are interested in helping us out in this way, please visit www.the3day.org or call 800-996-3DAY to register today.  You can also become a crew member of Relentless Optimism (our team for the Boston event) by going to our team page on the 3 Day website and clicking "Register to join team" in the box where our team members are listed.

I know I have a lot of friends who are doctors, nurses, ATs and the like.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider joining us in Boston and being a part of the awesome Medical Crew!!

Mel checking in with the Medical Crew at lunch on Day 2, Atlanta 2007

PS - According to today's KomenLink newsletter, if you register between April 12 – 23 and use the promotional code TEAMKOMEN at checkout, you will get a $25 discount off the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ registration!  An added incentive to register for the Medical Crew!

You Know You're a 3 Day Walker When...

One of my fellow Online Ambassadors for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure, Nicole, has recently been compiling a "You Know You're a 3 Day Walker When..." list on her blog One Step at a Time.  She first posted her own list in early February.  From there, she got so many great suggestions that she compiled a second, even longer list.  Both of these lists are great and well worth checking out.  If you're a veteran 3 Dayer, you will definitely nod in agreement with most of these lists.  If you're new to the 3 Day, you'll know all about these things soon enough!

Some of my favorites from the original "You Know You're a 3 Day Walker When..." list:

2.  Half of your wardrobe is pink. -- Also, half of my gadgets including my cell phone and mp3 player.
8.  Altruism is an innate part of your being.
20.  You dream of a world without breast cancer and believe in your heart it will happen one day.

My favorites from the second "You Know You're a 3 Day Walker When..." list, which I think was even better than the first:

1.  When a 5-mile walk is a “Stroll in the Park”. -- Literally!
5.  When you walk your dog and she’s wearing a pink bandana. -- Shenanigans loves her bandana!
8.  Talking about blisters at dinner seems like a normal mealtime topic.
9.  You’re proud, not embarrassed, to wear a fanny pack. -- Love my Mountainsmith!
10.  You wear your victory shirts all the time, hoping someone will ask about it so you can convert another 3-Day walker.
14.  You start packing for every trip using Ziploc bags, trying to stuff an entire day’s clothes in each one. -- Just like this!
24.  You can’t listen to a 3-Day commercial or watch one without tearing up.
28.  Your inbox shows “a donation was made on your behalf” and it feels like you won the lottery.
33.  Your philosophy on blisters is that they don’t need chemo.

Want to learn what this is all about?  Register for the 3 Day now!

Getting Started at a Getting Started Meeting!

One of the first things that I recommend that everyone do after they register for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure is to attend a Getting Started Meeting.  And don't just mean the newbies - I think everyone should attend, regardless of if this is your first 3 Day or 10th 3 Day.  You can always use a refresher!

Why should I attend a Getting Started Meeting?

For starters, the Getting Started meeting serves as an overview of the entire 3 Day experience, from training and fundraising to the receommended gear and outfitters to life on the event.  It's just about the only time you're going to get all of that information in one place.  This is particularly helpful if you're new to the event or if you're still on the fence about signing up.  For the more experienced participants (walkers and crew!), it's an opportunity to go over some of the things you may have forgotten from last year and to get some new ideas from your fellow participants.  The Getting Started meeting is also a great opportunity to meet some of your local coaches as well as your fellow 3 Dayers.  Who knows, you might even meet your future training partner or tent mate!  Finally, every time I've attended a Getting Started meeting, I've come away with a renewed sense of commitment and energy for the 3 Day.  I am always brimming with fresh ideas that I can't wait to put into action and I know you'll feel the same way!

What happens at a Getting Started Meeting?

Well, if you're anything like me, the first thing that will happen is that you will get lost and be late.  That's been my problem 2 of the 3 times I've attended these meetings.  But eventually, I always get there.  Here's a hint:  look for the cars with pink ribbon stickers all over them.  That's a good sign that you're in the right place!

I think I'm finally in the right place!

For the most part, these meetings generally follow the same format.  From what I remember from the one time I was on time, they usually start with having people introduce themselves and talking a little bit about what has brought everyone to the 3 Day.  The bulk of the meeting is then taken up with a somewhat lengthy slideshow that covers just about every aspect of the 3 Day that you can think of.  During the slideshow at the meeting I attended last night we hit upon:
  • How to use your Participant Center on the 3 Day website
  • Lots of fundraising tips ("Ask everyone and ask big!")
  • Various tools that are available to aid in your fundraising
  • Where the funds go that the 3 Day raises
  • How to set up a team and why it's a good idea
  • Training advice and resources
  • The various bits of "3 Day Flair" that you can collect, including Legacy Pins and Milestone Stickers
  • Information about what the crew does and how to get involved with it
  • What to expect throughout the 3 Day event, including camp life and life along the route
  • Other activities for 3 Dayers to take part in, including the 3 Day Expo and clinics
And so much more!  This walk in Boston will be my third 3 Day and I still came away with some great new ideas.  Don't be intimidated by the idea of having to sit through a long presentation.  This isn't like school.  This is about getting the information and resources that you need to accomplish this huge goal that you've set out for yourself!

In addition to the slide show, you will also get an oppotunity to watch the 3 Day informational video that will absolutely make you cry.  There is also usually extra copies of the DVD for you to have so that you can show all of your friends, family and donors exactly what this 3 Day thing is all about.

Makes me cry every time I watch it!

In addition to the DVDs, there will also be informational worksheets for you to pick up that summarize the information covered in the meeting.  The worksheets also have some personal challenges for every attendee to get started on their fundraising and training as soon as possible.

In addition to the resources that are there for you to take home, there are also books and flyers full of training and fundraising advice for you to thumb through to help you get ideas.  And if there aren't enough ideas in there for you, there is also plenty of time to ask any and all questions that you may have about the 3 Day, both during the presentation and after.

Lots of good ideas in there...

Finally, if you aren't yet registered, you will have the opportunity to sign up at the Getting Started meeting.  I can't imagine sitting through this whole meeting and not being moved to sign up right then and there!

When and where are these Getting Started Meetings?
Getting Started Meetings are held a few times a month, generally in and around the cities where the Breast Cancer 3 Day events are held.  If you are lucky enough to live in one of these cities (like me), then you can find out when your local meetings are by checking out the Calendar on the 3 Day website.  From your Participant Center, you can find links to the calendar in two places:

Clicking either of the links that I've highlighted will take you to the 3 Day Calendar.  There you can search for all of the Getting Started Meetings happening in your neck of the woods.  As of right now, there are meetings scheduled through the end of March all around the country.  And trust me, there are a lot of meetings scheduled.  Check out the calendar just for this week:

If there isn't a meeting happening near you, there is a still an option - you can attend a meeting over the phone!  I can't exactly remember why, but I have also sat in on one of these phone meetings.  The meetings aren't quite as long and you won't get to watch the video, but you'll still get all of the same information as at the in person meetings.  You will receive an email before the meeting with the handouts and you'll also have a chance to ask your questions over the phone.  You can find out when the phone meetings are taking place on the 3 Day Calendar as well (filter the meetings list to "phone meetings" only).  There are five phone meetings scheduled for the month of February:
  • February 4th at 7pm EST
  • February 9th at 9pm EST
  • February 16th at 8pm EST
  • February 18th at 8pm EST
  • February 22nd at 6pm EST
Wherever and whenever you decide to attend a meeting is totally up to you.  The important thing is that you attend one.  And remember - give yourself lots of time to get lost and look for the cars with the pink ribbon stickers on the back.  That's a tip from a Getting Started Meeting pro!

A Delicious Look at the 3 Day Crew!

One of the best parts of being involved in the 3 Day is that you are instantly part of this much larger community of creative people willing to anything to get the word out.  I often stumble across really unique things that people do to either commemorate their 3 Day experience or raise awareness for the event.  Today, I wanted to spotlight one of these endeavors.

To honor the crew members for the DFW 3 Day at their Christmas party, blogger Hopesmommy created this amazing cake:

Using her creativity and mad cake decorating skills, she was able to represent a whole handful of the different jobs that are performed by the 3 Day Crew as well as some of the hallmarks of the Breast Cancer 3 Day Camp.  See if you can spot them all based on my pictures of the real things!

1.  The flags!  These flags always line the road heading into and out of camp.  We also carry smaller versions of these flags along the route to remind everyone of the many, many reasons that we all walk.

The flags at the Atlanta camp in 2008
2.  The tents!  The sea of pink tents is always a sight to behold when you enter camp.

Pink tents as far as the eye can see!

3.  The semi-trucks!  The 3 Day folks use these big rigs for everything from hauling staging to showering.

Semis for showering (L) and semis for hauling (R)

4.  The vans!  In addition to the semis, the 3 Day Crew makes great use of conversion vans.  Sweep vans follow us up and down the route collecting walkers that need a lift.  Additional pit vans used to move around all the gear needed at the various pit stops.  Regardless of their purpose, these vans are always decorated to the nines.  Seeing the themed vans always brings a smile to my face!

Sweep vans!

Pit vans!

5.  Route safety (aka MotoCrew)!  The sweep vans aren't the only people keeping tabs on us walkers.  We are also trailed by ambulances (sorry, I didn't have a picture of that one) and the MotoCrew.  The MotoCrew ride up and down the route on bicycles and motorcycles making sure that everyone is feeling good.  They also help out at street crossings to make sure we don't get hit by cars.  They are some of the most energetic and fun people - you can't feel tired around the MotoCrew!

We love the Atlanta MotoCrew!

With characters like these, who wouldn't love them?

6. Hydration!  Last, but certainly not least, are the hardworking crew members that keep us fed and hydrated, even in the pouring rain.

I promise they get more business when it isn't 40 degrees and raining!

I think that Hopesmommy did a fantastic job representing all of these hardworking men and women in her 3 Day Cake.  I just wish I could have been there to taste it - it looks delicious!
